Days 13 and 14

July 5 – Whistler Sighseeing Pass

Best $100/person that we have spent. Just the first 1800m gondola ride up the mountain was worth it. This was followed be the Peak to Peak ride where we got out and did some exploring.

A couple of hoary marmots out on a show for us. It is their whistle that influenced the name of Whistler.
Peak to Peak – amazing feat of engineering.
A determined woman who had to touch the snow. Might have sent a snowball Mark’s way as well.
I had just finished telling him he would fall. Unfortunately, I didn’t capture the actual fall. This is a re-enactment

Wayne and Donna then relaxed in the Umbrella bar while the rest of us caught a chair lift to the suspension bridge. We walked that and the viewing platform before then completing the 3km track back to the original gondola past the snow walls.

A bit cold so changed from cap to beanie.
Leaning forward with some trepidation. It was high up there.
Suspension Bridge
Out on the Raven’s Eye. A triangular walking platform, more sturdy than the bridge.

Danny and Madonna continued exploring, caught another ski lift and saw bears.

The rest of us returned to the Longhorn Bar where Donna caught up with Reagan, a girl she used to coach. We were given some pretty special treatment due to association. Watched Norway beat Brazil and the retired to our rooms for an afternoon nap.

Longhorn Bar

I tapped out for the rest of the night. Literally, stayed in and washed my hair. I left it to the others to experience the nightlife. I heard stories of:

  • the rest of the team watching soccer at the Hilton
  • Wayne, Jo, Dave, Madonna and Danny searching for KFC
  • Wayne giving up and buying some cookies instead
KFC found after Wayne left.

July 7 – Drive to Revelstoke

Car 2 took the lead. Immediately took wrong turns…twice.

Do you need a map, Mark?

Driving alongside the idyllic Shuswap Lake was incredible. Danny was convinced it had to be one of the world’s greatest lakes in area and was very disappointed to find it was quite insignificant to others.

Snacks and a map

Ironically, after a huge chastisement, car 1 also got lost…twice. First, leaving the place we stopped for lunch and ending up in a residential area. Then, going into Salmon Arm and having a huge freight train with a million carriages (hyperbole) and a maverick GPS preventing us from meeting the others.

Meet at the jetty in Salmon Arm, you said. Where is Car 1? In the Marriott Hotel carpark, about 10 minutes from the designated meeting place.
Longest, curved, freshwater, wooden wharf in North America – a photo is the only way Car 1 was seeing it!
Dave even spotted a salmon.

Revelstoke

Check-in at the Sandman Hotel was also a little trying. After 30 minutes of lacklustre response from the girl behind the desk, Danny gave himself a yellow card. Rooms weren’t ready despite it being after 4pm. Breathe!

We walked to the golf club for dinner and drinks. Great call by Wayne. Lovely service, food and view – didn’t see the resident moose, however.

Golf club
We had a lovely girl from Wales looking after us and she took a photo on the green. She stated that Revelstoke is a number one place for skiing which is why she has settled here longer than other places.
